*Private Charters for up to 6 passengers.

What a great way to start your day! Meet us at the new Kawaihae Harbor South small boat harbor, only 10-15 minutes from the Kohala Coast resorts.

Come play in some of the best sailing and humpback whale watching waters in the world aboard Riva, a classic open ocean 34-foot sloop-rigged sailboat! The prevailing tradewinds of Kawaihae provide plenty of breeze to fill our sails, and the seas are usually small and friendly.During your sail you can take the helm or just take in the spectacular views. We’ll explore the waters of the Hawaiian Islands Humpback Whale National Marine Sanctuary, and look for dolphins and watch humpback whales on the way to our snorkel spot, which is usually in a protected marine life area. Our crew member, a marine naturalist, will answer your questions and share interesting facts about the sanctuary and its denizens. You’ll learn that the sanctuary is not only home to humpback whales each winter, but another dozen different types of wild cetaceans (whales and dolphins) live here year-round, including spinner dolphins, bottlenose dolphins, and false killer whales.

The snorkel spots we visit along the Kohala Coast reveal some of the most interesting underwater ecosystems in the world, and are also within sanctuary waters. (Snorkel gear is provided, or bring your own.) Our crew is in the water with you, to ensure that you’re comfortable, and to share information about what you’ll see. A variety of marine life thrives in these clear waters year-round, including Hawaiian green sea turtles, colorful reef fish found nowhere else on earth, invertebrates and corals.

Local coffee, juice, banana bread, island fruits, cheeses, deli meats, local vegetables, local Bread, macadamia nuts and maui style chips will be served as you cruise the Kohala Coast. We’ll have you back in time to enjoy lunch at one the fine eateries in Kawaihae village.

Sailing with Capt. Steve Turner on Riva is the perfect vessel to get the most of your humpback whale watch.
Why perfect? Four reasons:

Capt. Steve has more than 26 years’ experience as a professional whale watch captain in Hawaii, and he has taken thousands of passengers off shore to observe these mighty marine mammals and their mesmerizing behaviors. He has mastered the techniques to provide you the best whale watch possible without disturbing the natural behavior of the whales. Our naturalist/interpreter will share all you want to know about humpback whales, and interpret the behaviors we see.

Wide open photo ops

We take six passengers max, so you won’t have to navigate around someone else’s body for that awesome shot -- that means more great photos.

Hear them exhale

Riva is super quiet under sail, and with the engine off, you can hear the humpbacks exhale or “blow. ”Sometimes you can even hear  their inhalation and the water roll off their tail flukes when they dive. We'll listen to their famous singing with our hydrophone and sometimes we hear their song through the hull of the vessel! This isn’t typical on most boats; quiet is a very important factor for an excellent whale watch. On vessel RIVA you'll never have to endure loud motors or a blasting PA system.

Our 34-foot sailboat Riva harnesses the wind whenever possible during our whale watch. When we do use the engine, we burn less fuel than any other boat: only a ¼ gallon an hour.
